Why You Must Do Niche Research?

Niche Research

Of course, the short answer is “because it’s necessary”, but I will try to do better than that for you. Remember earlier when I told you that it is easier to create or find a product that already has a demand for it than it is to create a demand for a product that has none? Well, it’s true, and you can bet on it. Therefore, you will need to research your niche to find out if any of your three ideas from the last step have a demand for them and are worth pursuing. Let’s use an example of what one of your ideas may be.

Let’s suppose you are really passionate about your two dogs. They are purebred silky terriers. You want to make a website all about them. (Before you ask, yes, you can make money with this.) First, go to http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/. It will open in a new window. Once you get the window open, come back here for more instructions. This is Overture’s Keyword Selection tool. OK. Now enter the keyword ‘dog’ in the space provided and click the arrow. You can see there are probably over 1.5 million results. (These numbers will vary on a month to month basis, so if you got something more or less than 1.5 million, don’t worry about it.) That means that 1.5 million people typed the word dog into their search engine in the previous month. You can see there are a lot of people looking for information on dogs.

Now try this. Type in the words silky terrier and see what happens. Once again, when I tried this
my results were 12517. You may have more or less. But, this means that 12517 people searched for information on silky terriers in the previous month. Pretty good. Ok. So far, so good. Now open
a new browser window with this link http://www.google.com/ and come back here for instructions. This is Google’s main search window. Type in the word “silky terrier” and click the ‘Google Search’ button. When the results are displayed look in the upper right side corner for the number of websites listed

as a result of your search. When I did this, there were a little over 1 million. This means there are over a million websites containing ‘silky terrier’ as a keyword. So if you put up a site about silky
terriers, yours will be 1 of over a million results returned.

Sidenote: To do the keyword research you can use a software like SEO Powersuite

You mean I have to compete with over a million other sites? No, no, no, no, no. You do not. Most people, yourself included I’ll bet, will visit sites on the first or second page of their search results, right? Pages three through a thousand never get a glance. But that doesn’t mean you have to compete with a million other sites. The search engines return results based on relevancy. This means that if you want your website to get on the very first page of the search results, you only need to compete with the guy who holds the number 10 spot.

See? It’s not brain surgery after all! Just make a site better than his, and you have a spot on the first page. Do this kind of research for all of your theme ideas and you will be sure to come up with a winner. Next we’ll explore how to turn your website into a cash machine.
